A lot of effort has been made in improving the ductility of NiAl alloys. No complete shape recovery can be obtained in NiAl-Fe(Mn) alloys, since the {gamma} phase has no contribution to the shape memory effect. However, a complete shape memory effect and pseudo-elasticity has been obtained in single phase (M or {beta}) single crystal NiAl alloy, which implies that the shape memory property of single phase NiAl or NiAl-based alloys should be good. The shape memory behavior of single phase polycrystalline NiAl are investigated very little, for the lack of ductility. Recently, a rare earth element Nd has been found an effective microalloying element in improving the ductility of NiAl alloy, which makes it possible to investigate the shape memory behavior of NiAl alloy with polycrystals. The present paper reports some results of the work on the shape memory behavior of polycrystalline NiAl-Nd alloy.
