Carbon dioxide pilots and projects in West Virginia, if proven technically successful and economically viable, may renew the life of many oil fields in the Appalachian basin. Injection of CO/sub 2/ is to begin in fall 1982 in what is believed to be the first commercial CO/sub 2/ flood in the Appalachian region. Columbia Gas Transmission Co. of Charleston, West Virginia was operator of the area's first CO/sub 2/ Injection Pilot Project, which started in 1976. Now Columbia engineers are preparing to inject CO/sub 2/ into a 63-acre portion of the Granny's Creek Field in Clay County. This project is 3/4-mile northeast of the original 6.7-acre pilot which was conducted as a cost-shared program with the U.S. Department of Energy. A summary of the project is provided.
