Instances of severe chloride-related corrosion have been reported for the distillation areas of coal liquefaction pilot plants. In the investigation reported in this paper, controlled amounts of chloride were added to coal liquid samples, fractions of those samples, and mixtures of representative model compounds. The corrosivity of these media was measured using corrosion test coupons. It was found that water-soluble chlorides, basic nitrogen compounds and phenols showed a synergism that resulted in high corrosivity when those compounds were present simultaneously in the liquid. The corrosion was of the same type as that observed in the pilot plant environments. The results also indicate that the corrosion is a chemical reaction, which in the case of carbon steel corresponds to a product stoichiometry of FeCl/sub 2/ and has a corrosion rate proportioned to the concentration of unreacted inorganic chlorides in the liquid.
