Coker: a high-technology answer to tough crude
It is expected that there will be proportionally more heavy, high sulfur crude oil in the world, and light oil will be in short supply. Chevron's refinery at Pascagoula, Mississippi is designed to be flexible; to be able to adapt very quickly to changes in crude oil supply. Chevron forecasts show sales of heavy fuel oil dropping to less than 15% over the next few years. The coker is the center piece of the $1.3 billion Pascagoula refinery modification, capable of upgrading heavy, high-sulfur crude oil to lighter products such as gasoline. The coker processes crude oil in batches and makes coke a solid product, while virtually every other process generates a liquid. The operation of the coker is discussed.
