Comparisons are made between collision-induced dissociation spectra obtained by mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (MS/MS) using triple quadrupole and sector instruments. Data are given for methyl-substituted aza polynuclear aromatics and the isomeric primary amino PNAs. Isomer distinction is possible for standard compounds in both high- and low-energy MS/MS spectra and is based upon the same processes in both energy regimes. Ammonia reagent gas simplifies the chemical ionisation mass spectrum of solvent-refined coal (SRC II) and enhances the relative abundance of basic constituents. The MS/MS methodology showed the M/Z 144 component in the SRC II to be a mixture of at least 3 methylquinoline isomers.
