An investigation was made of the temperature dependences of the crystal lattice parameters, saturation magnetization, paramagnetic susceptibility, coercive force, and magnetostriction of single crystals of the intermetallic compound UGa/sub 2/. In the magnetically ordered state (T/sub c/=125/sup 0/K), the magnetic moment of uranium is 2.71 ..mu../sub B/ and it is due to the partly delocalized 5f electrons. Below T/sub c/, the compound UGa/sub 2/ experiences a strong orthorhombic distortion of the hexagonal lattice which is due to large magnetostrictive strains (lambdaapprox.10/sup -3/). There is a considerable magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant is K/sub 1/=-2 x 10/sup 7/ erg/g and the constant representing anisotropy in the basal plane is K/sub 3/=-0.6 x 10/sup 6/ erg/g.
