Thermal soak zones by fluidized fractures in unconsolidated, petroleum producing reservoirs

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6159852
Viscous petroleum may be produced from unconsolidated formations by the injection of steam at a pressure above that of the overburden pressure. This serves to produce horizontal, fluidized zones, without shattering the formation. Thereafter, the well is shut down for a soak period after which the viscous oil is produced. One of the advantages claimed of this invention is that fairly large thermal soak zones are formed. This will enhance the recovery of the viscous petroleum from the reservoir by decreasing the viscosity of the deposits near such zones. Also, these zones serve as collection basins for the heated petroleum which will drain, by gravity, into them. The residual steam in the reservoir will tend to drive the heated petroleum into the well bore when the well is open. An example case history is cited. (2 claims)
