Consolidation of subterranean formations

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6159845
A method for consolidating subterranean formations firmly binds the loose particles of the formation together with a thermosetting synthetic resin. A thin coating of the resin is uniformly deposited over the surface of the particles to be consolidated and is subsequently hardened into a permeable consolidated mass of relatively high compressive strength by treatment with a gaseous curing agent. Uniform deposition of the resinous material is achieved by injecting the resin as a solution diluted with a volatile liquid solvent, and then vaporizing the solvent to cause the resin-forming material to be deposited as a coating on the particle surfaces. Increased strength can be achieved by including a complexing agent in the resin capable of effecting full penetration of the curing agent into the resinous coating. (19 claims)
