This study was undertaken to demonstrate the fate of organic compounds in sludge applied to soil and to extrapolate the consequences of repeated applications of contaminated sludges. High concentrations of sludge were used. Samples were taken at various depths and time intervals. The degradation and treatability of aromatic amines, polynuclear aromatic compounds, acidic compounds etc. is described. Movement of compounds and crop uptake is discussed. A cost effective approach for cleaning contaminated sites by recycling groundwater followed by isolation and land application of sludge is recommended. 13 references.
