The behavior of the uranyl ion in complexation reactions with ..pi..-acid ligands in aqueous and aqueous-organic solutions has been analyzed. It has been shown that between log K/sub st/ of the complexes and the values of the pK/sub a/ of the ligands there is a complex dependence, which can be divided into two linear segments with a discontinuity near pK/sub a/ = 0. A calculation of log K/sub st/ for uranyl complexes has been carried out with the use of the values of parameters which characterize the hardness of the uranyl ion and the basicity of the ..pi..-acid ligand. An evaluation of the level of the electrostatic interaction of UO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ with anions has been carried out, and a formula for calculating the stability constants of complexes with the use of molecular-energetic parameters of the interacting particles has been proposed. Arguments concerning the significant electrostatic contribution to the complexation of the UO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ ion with ..pi..-acid ligands have been advanced on the basis of an analysis of the thermodynamic parameters of the complexation processes. The influence of the hydration of the uranyl cation and the anions on the composition, extent of hydrolysis, and stability of complexes of UO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ in solutions has been discussed.
