We have made the first determination of relative cross sections for the population of individual {ital M}{sub {ital L}} substates in a double-electron capture collision by measuring the angular distribution of electrons emitted in the Auger decay of doubly excited 1{ital s}2{ital l}2{ital l}{prime}{sup 2}{ital L} states of C{sup 3+} formed in C{sup 5+}+He collisions. Large anisotropies were observed for the 1{ital s}2{ital p}{sup 2} {ital D} and 1{ital s}(2{ital s}2{ital p} {sup 1}{ital P}){sup 2}{ital P{ital o}} terms which varied markedly with projectile velocity in the range 0.29--0.50 a.u. A strong velocity variation was also observed for the total {ital L}-subshell relative cross sections.
