Municipal solid-waste landfills. Volume 1. General issues. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6153106
Sanitary landfills are currently the most prevalent method for the disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) both in Illinois and nationally. However, both the Illinois EPA and the US EPA rank land disposal as the least preferred MSW management technology. Waste reduction, recycling, and incineration are considered better alternatives. Although each of these options reduces the volume of waste destined for the landfill, there is currently no other viable disposal technology for some of the residuals. The report is intended to provide a basic understanding of the MSW dilemma that we are confronted with. The current reliance on the sanitary landfill, with capacity and economic data for both Illinois and the United States is illustrated. The elements of landfill design, operation, and closure which can be used to minimize the impacts of land disposal are presented.
