Hydrodynamics, mixing, and segregation in gas fluidized beds: Technical progress report, 22 April 1987 to 21 July 1987

This technical progress report covers the progress made in the project entitled ''Hydrodynamics, Mixing, and Segregation in Gas Fluidized Beds,'' under Grant No. DOE FG22-85PC80511. Efforts during this period have been focused on the continued computation of solids turbulent stresses and on the study of the mechanism of the global fluctuating motion of the solids in fluidized beds. In the previous report we presented a new area-averaging statistical approach which enabled us to calculate the solids turbulent stresses from the experimental measurement of the motion of a tracer particle. Only partial results were completed at the time of that report. This effort has been continued and three complete sets of the results have been obtained. These are presented in the present report. Unfortunately, due to damage to some data discs, some of the particle tracking data have been lost. Hence the results here do not cover all of the conditions previously studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 6 refs., 8 figs.
