Title: Research into fracture behavior of mild steel with residual stress

Journal Article · · Scripta Metallurgica et Materialia; (United States)
OSTI ID:6151367

The present work is to investigate the effect of residual stress on the fracture behavior of mild steel. The result further revealed that at the temperature, T[sub c][sup *], the material has the crack arrest property: A steep transition of the fracture load of the material with residual stress occurs at T[sub c][sup *]. This finding is very important for the temperature, T[sub c][sup *], to be used to evaluate the low-temperature brittleness of welded structures. The material used in this investigation was a mild steel (16Mn) with 0.17wt percent carbon and 1.47wt percent manganese.
