Hydraulic excavators: reference for the surface mine operator
This survey is intended as a reference guide for the surface mine operator. It indicates what crawler-mounted hydraulic excavators are available on today's market. The survey is split into two parts. The first part lists pertinent specifications for excavators with bucket capacities greater than 3 cubic meters. The second part lists seven important specifications for hydraulic excavators with bucket capacities less than 3 cubic meters. In recent years, the use of hydraulic excavators in mining applications has been increasing. Hydraulic shovels may one day become the dominant equipment used for removing overburden in certain mines. Front-end loaders, cable shovels, and hydraulic excavators all have their strong and weak points in actual use and when choosing a piece of equipment, the mine operator must judge what kind of equipment best suits his needs. As far as hydraulic excavators are concerned, the main trend over the past few years has been increasing size. These large machines, coupled with high selectivity, mobility, and bucket control features common to all hydraulic excavators, present a serious challenge to cable shovels. Another important trend in hydraulic excavators is the use of electric power for the prime mover instead of Diesel engines. This is particularly significant in the larger machines.
