Health-hazard evaluation determination report No. 75-146-254, Custom Furniture and Cabinets, Inc. , Post Falls, Idaho
A health-hazard evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on August 19-20, 1975, at the Custom Furniture and Cabinets, Inc., a facility engaged in the manufacturing of custom-built kitchen cabinets. The survey regarded exposure to solvent vapors present in the paint room. It was determined that the air concentration of acetone, aliphatic naphtha, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, isopropyl alcohol, and toluene were toxic. This determination was based on air concentrations that ranged from 0.32 to 2.18 times the current accepted exposure limits, and on questionnaire information obtained from exposed employees which revealed the presence of eye irritation, dizziness, light-headedness, headaches and dry hands. Recommendations are made for improving work practices and exhaust ventilation, as well as for the establishment of a respirator program.
