More bound populations around cD galaxies

Two populations of objects that are bound to the central dominant galaxy of eight rich clusters are reported, together with two additional marginal detections; attention is given to the curious case of the population A 2634, in which the cD galaxy has a peculiar velocity of 375 km/sec but appears to have a bound population, when the mean cluster redshift is substituted for the cD redshift. It therefore appears as though some clusters can contain a dynamically bound population without the presence of a centrally-located cD. The apparent contradiction between close passage and the survival of the bound population galaxies is rectified by the hypothesis that galaxies which are members of the bound population are on highly radial orbits with a typically 150-kpc apogee. 40 refs.
