Safe isolation of dual relief valves for maintenance

The chemical processing industries are eliminating the practice of allowing pressure relief valves, rupture discs and other devices to vent directly to the atmosphere, due to increased emphasis on reducing harmful emissions to the environment. Discharge from the relief device usually is directed to some type of vent collection system and then a a flare or other disposal unit. In some instances, a flare vent header system installed to collect the discharge from relief devices on several different vessels or piping systems has created other safety problems. This article discusses these safety problems and presents several approaches to solve these problems.
