Fuel resource scheduling, part II - Constrained economic dispatch

Journal Article · · IEEE Trans. Power Appar. Syst.; (United States)
The constrained economic dispatch, subject to fuel supply and consumption constraints and unit operating constraints, with shared and mixed fuels, is formulated as a minimum cost network flow problem. To include the piece-wise linear I/O relationship of the generating units, an iterative procedure based on a minimum cost network flow (with arc gains) algorithm is presented. The network flow algorithm is extended to include the non-linearity of monotonically increasing IHR curves for unit characteristics. This non-linear network is solved as a sequence of linear networks with artificial unit limits. These artificial limits are calculated from the current solution of the linear network and used in calculating the next solution of the linear network. This procedure is continued until the solution approaches that of the nonlinear network to satisfy the equal incremental cost criterion. The test results for a 17 unit/17 contract test system indicate that the proposed algorithms are fast enough for use in energy control center applications.
