Geothermal energy is one of the renewable energy sources available in the US - and in many parts of the world. The principal domestic source, now generating electricity from natural dry steam, is The Geysers, situated about 90 miles north of San Francisco. This 17,000-acre field began producing power back in 1960. By next year, 15 units will be generating 908 MW. Geologists and developers believe The Geysers has the potential for generating 2,000 MW - about 10% of PG and E's total system capacity.
