A B.F. Goodrich chemical plant will burn high-sulfur Illinois coal in a new $21.3 million fluidized-bed boiler for an estimated saving of $3 million in the first year and a conservative payback estimate of four years. As one of few user-funded installations, the company anticipates additional installations in other plants if the technology proves itself. The boiler will use an estimated 50,000 tons of Illinois high-sulfur coal a year and 14,000 tons of state limestone. The boiler will more than double labor costs, triple maintenance costs, and quadruple electricity costs, while reducing gas consumption by over 22%.
