Los Angeles' diamond lanes freeway experiment

Journal Article · · Traffic Q.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6144129
An experiment was conducted on the Santa Monica Freeway to conserve motor fuel, improve air quality, and demonstrate that an existing urban freeway can carry more people in fewer vehicles at minimal cost. Alternatives to encourage greater use of buses and carpools were evaluated. The project's side-effects included: traffic accidents and injuries; and time losses for thousands of motorists. The project did not significantly decrease air pollution, save fuel, or alleviate traffic congestion. Automotive technological progress is the most effective policy to ensure increased energy conservation and continued reduction in air pollution. (1 map, 2 tables)
