Explosive-powder compaction system

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6143311
Sandia National Laboratories has developed a pressure-control system and a test fixture to study the behavior of explosive materials during compaction. Both the pressure-control system and the test fixture are self-contained and portable. Explosive materials are compacted in a bridged header charge holder assembly by means of a test fixture and a pneumatic cylinder arrangement. Forces are measured with load cells to permit calculation of pressure at the bridgewire-powder interface and at the top of the compacted material. Data can be taken during the compaction process. Tests that can be done to characterize the material are: electrothermal response (ETR) as a function of pressure; electrical resistivity; loading-ram displacement, and the corresponding applied and transmitted forces (from which pressures can be calculated); and ignition and pressure output characteristics.
