Water sprays suppress gas-well blowout fires

This article describes large-scale simulation tests which were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of water spray systems to control and extinguish gas well blowout fires. Selected results from small-scale experiments performed in this research program are given primarily to help explain the development of the water spray extinguishment method, and also to examine scaling of important phenomena. Testing in this program has shown that it is feasible to extinguish these fires and/or reduce radiation from the flame using water sprays.
