French drill in 5624-ft waters

Journal Article · · Ocean Ind.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6141498
An exploratory well has been successfully drilled in 5624 ft of water in the Mediterranean Sea, a new water depth record for the petroleum industry. The project was designed to perfect subsea drilling equipment, riser components, and techniques that may be applied in water depths to nearly 10,000 ft. The syntactic-foam-equipped riser proved to be a sound product; reentry television equipment was satisfactory; riser-monitoring instruments yielded fairly accurate results; and the drillship Discoverer Seven Seas demonstrated outstanding stability under severe weather conditions.
