Aminoil's big program at Huntington Beach
The Huntington Beach oil field in California produced its one billionth barrel of oil in 1980, becoming the ninth field in the US to do so. In an effort to get more oil out of the field's more than one billion barrels of oil remaining in-place, Aminoil is initiating an enhanced recovery campaign that includes what is believed to be the first steam injection from a domestic offshore platform. The initial stage of the program is expected to cost California $5 billion. If the steaming project and other enhanced oil recovery test efforts are successful, the company's expenditures could range upward to several hundreds of millions of dollars over a period of years. Aminoil and its predecessor companies have been operating in the Huntington Beach field since the late 1930s, producing nearly 500 million bbl of oil over that period.
