The authors have investigated the effects of anion (F, Cl, OH) and cation (Sr) substitutions in apatite on track annealing in a series of about 300 isothermal experiments. This paper presents annealing data for two samples of fluorapatite, the most common variety of apatite in nature. The samples studied include a near-endmember fluorapatite and a fluorapatite containing 4.4% SrO. For each of the approximately 105 experiments reported herein, the authors have measured the reduction in etched lengths of confined fission tracks in prismatic mineral sections and documented the relationship between track length and crystallographic orientation during annealing. These data are used to construct mathematical models that describe the reduction of etched length as a function of time and temperature. These models, in turn, are used to (1) provide insight into the annealing process; (2) elucidate the effects of chemistry on annealing; and (3) predict length reduction at the low temperatures and long times characteristic of geological conditions.
