Hadron spectroscopy: an overview with strings attached

After describing some recent progress in understanding the status of the quark model within QCD, I suggest a picture for the ordinary hadrons, hybrids, and glueballs which provides a simple framework for studying these elements of hadron spectroscopy. Within the same picture, I discuss multiquark states, emphasizing their importance for understanding glue dynamics and, in a more practical context, nuclear physics.
