Pollution monitoring and reporting agencies provide a valuable service for people suffering from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, which make them susceptible to sulfur dioxide, dust, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone. Some agencies interpret the pollutant data into a general index of air quality to make it easier for the public to understand the information. A wide variety of indices have been standardized since 1977 as the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI). Regular media reports of the index are given and the level of each pollutant is given whenever one exceeds the national health standard.
