The heterotic string in curved /ital N/=1, /ital D/=10 superspace and the equations of motion of /ital D/=10 supergravity

The action of the heterotic string on a curved-superspace background is considered as a two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model with /ital N/=1, /ital D/=10 superspace as the tangent space. The background-field method is used to calculate the one-loop ultraviolet divergences of the effective action of the sigma model in an explicitly supersymmetric and covariant manner. The conditions of one-loop finiteness are used to derive the background-superfield equations, which (in the linearized approximation) are equivalent to the equations of motion of /ital N/=1, /ital D/=10 supergravity and /ital N/=1 supersymmetric Yang--Mills matter in /ital N/=1, /ital D/=10 superspace.
