Catalysts, kinetics, and reactor design in phthalic anhydride synthesis

Journal Article · · Catal. Rev., Sci. Eng.; (United States)

A review of the journal and patent literature on o-xylene and naphthalene oxidation to phthalic anhydride catalyzed by modified vanadium pentoxide catalysts covers the two-step (redox) kinetic models for the catalytic oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons; the reaction networks, product distributions, and rate models of o-xylene oxidation on various catalysts; the reaction networks, product distributions, and rate models of naphthalene oxidation on various catalysts; kinetics of benzene oxidation over vanadium/molybdenum mixed oxides; the noncatalytic (thermal and/or wall) reactions of o-xylene, naphthalene, and benzene; the development of industrial catalysts and fixed-bed processes; catalyst studies of vanadium loading, active sites, and the role of alkali metal sulfate promoters; experimental methods used in the studies; and modeling and scale-up approaches for industrial reactor design.
