Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) was conceived to provide economic storage and retrieval of hot and cold water available from by-product, cogeneration, or natural sources to partially or wholly satisfy later demands for space-temperature conditioning. The needs to reduce electricity-generation peaks and to conserve fossil fluid fuels would be partly met by ATES implementation. Field-test facilities at Mobile, Alabama and St. Paul, Minnesota are evaluating aquifer-system performance involving water injected at 80 and 150/sup 0/C, respectively. Efficiency of energy recovery and precipitation of solutes from connate water are key issues. Operation of a commercial chill-storage facility is discussed briefly.
