Development of new generation of subsea systems under way

Subsea development has come of age in the North Sea. Developments like the Shell/Esso Underwater Manifold Center (UMC), Texaco Ltd.'s Highlander and Petronella projects, and Occidental's Scapa field-all in the U.K. sector of the North Sea-have established the role of subsea development. F. Brian Walter, Texaco North Sea U.K. Co.'s assistant general manager, construction, says subsea systems are becoming accepted as a reliable and cost effective means of development when tied back to existing installations. Tie-back distances of 10-20 miles are practical with current technology and appropriate reservoir and oil quality conditions, he says. Extending beyond this range will, in most cases, require additional technological development and improvement in reliability of a number of components.
