A process is described for the desulfurization of a hydrocarbonaceous charge stock accompanied by the recovery of sulfur. Essentially, the present invention involves reacting a heavy hydrocarbonaceous charge stock and hydrogen in contact with a metal oxide catalyst. The resulting metal sulfide is separated from the product effluent, and regenerated in contact with oxygen to produce sulfur dioxide and the metal oxide. The hydrogen sulfide resulting from the conversion of sulfurous compounds is reacted with the sulfur dioxide, thereby producing elemental sulfur. The converted metal oxide is then recycled to combine with fresh charge stock. (6 claims)
