The chemical activities of various carbonaceous materials, represented by the rate constants of phosphorus formation by reduction from phosphate-silica melts, are compared. With respect to the phosphate-silica melt, the materials form the following series (of decreasing reactivity), which generally correlates with the degree of metamorphism of the materials or of their constituent coals: wood charcoal, brown-coal coke, gas-coal coke, bituminous-coal coke, coking coal, lean coal, anthracite, graphite.
