Kinetics and mass transfer in a fluidized-packed bed: catalytic hydrogenation of ethylene

OSTI ID:6132111
Kinetics and mass transfer in a fluidized-packed bed: catalytic hydrogenation of ethyleneto ethane was studied at 56/sup 0/-261/sup 0/C and flow rates of 600-48,000 cc/min in a 2.75 in. fluidized-packed bed reactor with 0.5 in. nickel/alumina catalyst as the fixed packing in combination with alumina and glass inert fluidized particles. The conversions were 0-91%. A numerical technique was developed to evaluate simultaneously the global mass transfer coefficient and reaction rate constant from integral conversion data. The global mass transfer coefficient between the interstitially fluidized bed and the catalyst surface was correlated in dimensionless form; and a reaction rate expression was found based on the unit exterior surface of the catalyst particle and the catalyst interfacial concentration. The combined kinetic model based on the mass transfer coefficient correlation and the surface reaction expression agreed well with experimental data in predicting conversion.
