Cogeneration retrofit generates savings at apartment complex

Cogeneration is no longer an abstraction at a 1000-family apartment complex in New York City. Two full years of operating experience with a retrofitted cogeneration system powered by five diesel and gaseous fueled engines have already netted savings of almost $500,000. Each of the engines can be modified to burn natural gas or diesel fuel, an option that will be used as part of a plan to develop alternative fuel capability. Average peak demand occurs during the air conditioning season and reaches 2000kw which is satisfied by three engine-generators operating simultaneously. Four units are on line for short periods to supply the absolute maximum demand of 2800 kw. In the off-season, just one engine-generator is sufficient to meet the demand of 500 kw occurring during more than half of each day.
