Mechanism of anion sorption on hydrated zirconium dioxide (HZD)
This report investigated the mechanism of sorption of inorganic ions on hydrated zirconium dioxide (HZD). The sorbent was obtained by the method described earlier. The static exchange capacity (SEC) of HZD was determined from the change of concentration of the given anion in solution after establishment of equilibrium. Changes of the solution pH were measured at the same time (with the LPU-01 pH-meter). The experimental results show that sorption of all the anions studied is accompanied by increase of the solution pH. This indicates that anion sorption on HZD proceeds by an ion-exchange mechanism, i.e., exchange of the anions in solution for OH/sup -/ ions displaced from the ion-exchanger. The influence of solution pH on anion sorption is also evidence of the ion-exchange mechanisms of sorption.
