Flotation of fine size coal: Mulga Mine, Mead Metals and Minerals Corporation

The Mineral Resources Institute of The University of Alabama conducted flotation tests of run-of-mine fine coal from the Mulga mines of the Mead Metals and Minerals Corporation, Birmingham, Alabama, to determine the feasibility of recovering a low-ash (and sulfur) coal acceptable for general industrial marketing. The sample contained about 64 percent coal, 32 percent ash, and 1.4 percent total sulfur. In the better flotation tests, about 92 percent of the coal was recovered in a product containing 6.4 percent ash and 1.2 percent sulfur. As simplicity of flowsheet was of prime consideration, no effort was made to reduce the pyritic sulfur of the concentrates other than the minimal normal rejection accompanying the flotation and cleaning of the coal froths. The benefits to be gained from incorporating a secondary flowsheet to remove the pyrite were questionable.
