Federal activity in developing air quality criteria

Conference · · J. Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6129335
The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare is charged by Congress in the Clean Air Act with the responsibility for developing criteria for two broad classes of contaminants: the oxides of sulfur and photochemical oxidants. Summaries of the relationships of the pollutants to their effects has been compiled. An exhaustive literature review has been made for each group of pollutants. Among the items considered in documenting the effects on man and animals are exposure of animals to elevated lethal concentrations, effects of more usual industrial exposures, short-term effects observed in the laboratory at low concentrations with man and animals, and the effects of community air pollution. Air quality criteria for carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen are to be prepared in the near future.
