Tar processing and gas phase hydrogenation in Leuna (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6129206
The brown coal tar processed in the liquid phase consisted of 45% middle oil plus gasoline and 55% residue. The tar had up to 1% dust (benzene-insolubles) with 50% ash and contained up to 2% water. Before processing, the dust and water had to be removed by centrifuging in order to avoid fouling the equipment and the catalyst and disrupting the process. The tar was then distilled with liquid phase stripper product to produce residue and middle oil and gasoline with a loss of 13%. The resulting stripper product (38% gasoline plus middle oil) was recycled. The raw tar arose from low temperature carbonization in two fractions, a liquid tar fraction and a light oil fraction; from the carbonization gases since inflammability of the light oil prevented centrifuging the two together. The distillation product at Leuna had a boiling terminus of 320/sup 0/C, but the terminus could be varied depending on cleanness of the starting product, thoroughness of the distillation, and amount of pressure in the gas phase. The report analyzes tar and stripper product. The amount of solid residues in the sludge depended on the amount of catalyst used. The sludge contained about 30% solids stemming from the catalyst and tar dust. The asphalt content was held under 3%. Quality checks on the sludge oil were made twice a week. Lowered ash content in the sludge solids indicated that the tar was not clean enough. Concerning gas phase hydrogenation, the report refers to the combination of catalyst 5058 prehydrogenation and catalyst 6434 splitting.
