Process and apparatus for treating radioactive waste

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6129022

This patent describes a process for treating radioactive waste. This process consists of: 1.) providing radioactive waste comprising at least one of radioactive liquid waste and radioactive waste slurry each of solid matter and water; 2.) conducting the radioactive waste to a first waste feed tank; 3.) Evaporating a portion of the water in an evaporator; 4.) withdrawing the evaporated water; 5.) conducting the waste from the evaporator to a second waste feed tank; 6.) conducting the waste from the second waste feed tank to the upper part of a centrifugal film dryer. The vaporized water is withdrawn and condensed. The remaining solid matter forms a dry film on the wall and rotating blades scrap the dry solid matter from the wall to form a dry powder which accumulates at the lower part of the dryer. 7.) withdrawing the accumulated powder; 8.) forming the withdrawn powder into pellets in a pelletizer, 9.) withdrawing the pellets to storage; washing the interior of the centrifugal film dryer and the pelletizer with hot water to remove the deposited powder, and conducting this water to a storage tank. 10.) conducting the material from the storage tank to the first waste feed tank to be treated as radioactive waste.
