We have measured the [nu]=0[r arrow]1 Raman-active vibron in HD to 120 GPa. We combine our results with previous work in H[sub 2], HD, and D[sub 2] to study inter- and intramolecular coupling in solid hydrogen to megabar pressures. We find that a model potential composed of inter- and intramolecular parts may be used to explain experimental results over a large pressure range. On the other hand, analyzing the intramolecular coupling using a Morse-type effective pair potential yields results that seem unphysical. We have also observed that HD molecules are stable against formation of H[sub 2] and D[sub 2] to the highest pressures studied.
