In order to investigate the influence of the chemical environment on the conversion of the E3 transition in /sup 99m/Tc we have measured the conversion and x-ray photoelectron spectra of (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/TcBr/sub 6/, Tc/sub 2/S/sub 7/, and KTcO/sub 4/. We have calculated theoretically the electronic structure and conversion probabilities for the anions TcO/sup -//sub 4/ and TcBr/sup 2 -//sub 6/ in the framework of a relativistic variant of the X/sub ..cap alpha../ scattered-wave technique. The data obtained give an idea of the nature and magnitude of the changes in the conversion process for various chemical surroundings of the technetium atom, they contain valuable information on the electronic structure of the chemical compounds, and in particular they indicate directly the substantial participation in the chemical binding of the Br4s, S3s, and O2s electrons.
