Structure of baryon matter and pion condensation

It is shown that it is necessary to take the pion field into account in order to elucidate the structure of baryon matter at densities of the order of the nuclear density. The pion-field energy gain associated with an increase in the number of kinds of baryons can exceed the loss associated with the production of particles (isobars, hyperons) heavier than the nucleons.
