Excitation of the low-energy octupole resonance in /sup 90/Zr by 0. 8 GeV proton inelastic scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C; (United States)
Analysis of 0.8 GeV proton inelastic scattering by /sup 90/Zr has yielded the angular distribution of a broad peak located at 32 A/sup -1/3/ MeV with a width of approximately 2.2 MeV. The angular distribution, extending from 1.0 to 3.2 fm/sup -1/, agrees well with L = 3 collective distorted-wave Born-approximation calculations. A deformation length ..beta..R of 0.80 fm is obtained. The isoscalar energy weighted sum rule fraction exhausted by an octupole excitation at 7.2 MeV in /sup 90/Zr with this deformation length is 23%. The 3/sup -/ state at 2.75 MeV in /sup 90/Zr is found to exhaust 8% of the isoscalar energy weighted sum rule. These results are in excellent agreement with recent (..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..') work which established the existence of the low-energy octupole resonance.
