Fuel cell system produces power and steam from coal

Journal Article · · J. Energy Eng.; (United States)
A conceptual energy supply system for an urban area is described. A large coal-gasification and gas-cleaning plant is located outside the city, feeding a dedicated pipeline. Several fuel cell power plants within the city are supplied by the pipeline, and produce electricity and cogenerate steam for local distribution. Placing the generating plant close to the load centre offers the opportunity of utilising thermal energy that would otherwise be rejected as waste heat. Environmental advantages are gained in locating the gasifier outside the urban area and the non-polluting fuel cell plants in the city itself.
