An improved technique for creating pain in the ..nu../sub 2/ band of NH/sub 3/ by optically pumping mixtures of NH/sub 3/ in N/sub 2/ is described. Conventional (<10-W power) cw CO/sub 2/ lasers were used to pump both /sup 14/NH/sub 3/ and /sup 15/NH/sub 3/. Lasing was obtained on more than thirty NH/sub 3/ transitions in the 11--13-..mu..m region, with a maximum output power of 1.2 W and conversion efficiencies as high as 17%. A simple rate equation model is used to explain the inversion mechanism.
