Database machine architecture for performing aggregations

This work describes a database machine architecture to improve the performance of the aggregation operation of the relational model. The basic premise is that there is some fundamental upper limit on the processing power available from a single processor. To obtain processing power beyond this limit requires the use of multiple processors. The architecture described makes use of multiprocessors and special purpose hashing hardware to aid in the formation of groups. This architecture permits an aggregation algorithm where each particular group is processed by just one processor and is not distributed over several processors. It is shown that this property results in a performance gain that is equivalent to the number of processors. 14 refs.
