Biofiltration as an air pollution control technology uses microbes living on a fixed solid medium to chemically transform contaminants in an air stream. This project had two objectives: (1) to determine whether significant emissions of nitrogen-containing compounds can occur during biofilter operations and (2) to determine whether destruction of nitrogen oxides (NO) can be carried out in biofilters. Biofilters are increasingly been used to destroy VOC emissions. Based on this study, these NO emissions appear to be relatively low. Although this study was not able to establish the use of biofiltration systems for controlling NO emission, it demonstrated that biofilters have the potential for being adapted for this purpose. The lower cost and operationally simplicity of biofilters could lead to a more cost-effective NO control system than is currently available, especially from small distributed sources, such as steam generators or pumps.
